Report of new varieties Bella Lorena, the first hybrid of Spathoglottis (Orchidaceae) obtained in Cuba

Abstract

Hybrid seeds, derived from the intraspecific crossing
of two species of Spathoglottis genus (Spa. plicata and Spa.
kimballiana), were germinated through in vitro culture, and finally
the first terrestrial orchid hybrid was obtained in Cuba, Bella Lorena,
which has pink petals with yellow borders, both of a very dark color,
also dark yellow sepals with pink border and purple to red and
yellow labelo with dark yellow lateral lobules and red points inwards.
This new species will contribute to preserve and make the environment
more beautiful; besides, it is a valuable contribution to Cuban ornamental
agriculture.
