Abstract

This study was aimed at improving the drought
tolerance level of tomato by means of osmoconditioning
treatments, inducing its natural capacity to get adapted under
adverse conditions and to be considered as an acquired
tolerance. Two trials were conducted with Amalia cv. seedlings.
The first trial proved the method viability, besides recording
crop growth and biomass partitioning in young plants. The
second one evaluated the effect of the same adaptative
treatments in plant response under hard dryland conditions
as well as its agronomic performance. Biomass partitioning of
the aerial part and root, stomatal conductance and yield were
analyzed. Osmoconditioning treatments in tomato seedlings
provoked quantitative changes in a series of adaptative
physiological responses along its biological cycle, which were
considered agronomical improvements under drought
conditions, such as: total biomass increment, higher yield, a
greater root/aerial part ratio and better water relations or a
higher stomatal conductance. Evidently, results showed the
possibility of increasing agronomic yields under drought
conditions through inducing adaptative tomato capacity after
seed emergence stage.
