Abstract

The commercial yield increase of asparagus is
influenced by the perennial section size of plants commonly
named spiders or crowns, which every year produce a greater
number of shoots giving rise to commercial turions. The aim of
the present work was to study the behavior at harvest of three
green asparagus spider sizes. It started in Azul, Buenos Aires,
on September 12, 2003. The following variables were evaluated:
total fresh weight harvested and for each harvest, number of
turions and thickness of each one, by means of USDA patterns
defined for Asparagus officinalis. Treatments were performed
on three spider sizes: G: large ( >200 g), M: medium (100-200 g)
and Ch: small (<100 g) with four repetitions. Plants derived
from greater spiders achieved a significantly higher production
(kg.ha-1 and number of turions). At the beginning of the
productive stage, when plants still have enough reserves, their
production is quite the same, but once most of the reserve is
consumed, they start presenting significant differences
according to its reserve capacity. A direct relationship was
recorded between spider size for planting and yield (kg.ha-1). Over
the first harvest year, a greater amount of medium turions was
obtained, followed by small and large ones.
