Abstract

With the aim of evaluating the chemical and
microbiological composition of biosolids from ??Quibú? Residual
Water Purifying Station, this work was carried out at the
National Institute of Agricultural Sciences (INCA). The paper
evidenced that these organic residuals have relatively high
levels of organic matter (MO), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P)
and calcium (Ca), whereas lower levels of magnesium (Mg)
and potassium (K). These contents were comparable with the
most frequently used organic fertilizers in our agriculture and
similar to other biosolids found in the world. Amounts of heavy
metals and pathogenic microorganisms are recorded in lower
levels than the maximum values set up by agricultural
regulations in several countries. In general, results show that
the agricultural application of these residuals could be a viable
alternative to evacuate them, which could be very important
in agricultural production systems.
