Abstract
breeding is its reduced genetic base. Molecular markers have
become a a useful tool for researchers and plant breeders to
explore the available genetic variability in crop gene pool,
looking for a better profitableness of such collection. In this
paper, a sugarcane collection composed by 89 Saccharum
complex clones, previously chosen for their outstanding vigor
and resistance to major diseases, is studied. The clones
used in the introgression of sugarcane are from S. officinarum,
S. spontaneum, S. robustum, S. barberi and S. sinense species,
Erianthus genus and a group of wild clones collected in Laos,
useful for crop breeding. They were previously characterized
for their agronomical performance under germplasm bank
conditions and the molecular genetic diversity detected
enabled to classify genotypes in four groups employing six
RFLP descriptors and Saccharum specific primers previously
reported. Their genetic diversity revealed by agronomical
components, resistance to main diseases as well as their
molecular groups were employed to recommend sources to
increase the genetic base of the Cuban introgression program
of sugarcane.
