Abstract

With the objective of transferring cytoplasmicmale sterility (EMC) to the Cuban variety ??Virginia Resistente?,in the Tobacco Research Institute of Cuba, a backcrossingprogram started in 1996 on a carrier line of androesterilitysource from Nicotiana bigelovii species, using the new Cubanvariety as recurrent parent. After the sixth backcrossing, theandrosterile line obtained was compared with the fertile varietyby means of a ??t? of Student test of mean of comparison. There are not any significant differences between theandrosterile analogue obtained and the commercial variety;therefore, it is demonstrated that there is not a negative effectof interaction between foreign cytoplasm used to incorporateandrosterility and the nucleus of Nicotiana tabacum. Thisresult enables to obtain enough quantities of F1 hybrid as toguarantee androsterile commercial seed production.
