Abstract

The results of a study are presented in this work,
which was carried out in the Provincial Sugarcane Research
Station of Holguin, with the objective of estimating the
heritability of some characters related to sugar content and
maturation of this crop, as well as to know the general
combining ability of the parents used in a North Carolina II or
factorial backcrossing design. The study was made in the
clonal lot 2 of the selection outline, in which field refractometric
brix, laboratory brix, index of maturity, pol % cane, sucrose and
purity were evaluated at the beginning and end of harvest
(January and April, respectively). Analysis of univariate
variance, HGG calculation, h2o-p estimate and multivariate
analysis (ACP and AFD) were performed. Important differences
were recorded in the behavior of offsprings when comparing
the results of samplings made at the beginning and end of
harvests; in the former one, there was a higher variability and
heritability estimates were higher; therefore, the evaluation
and selection are recommended in that moment. The effect of
female parents was more important, so that it should be kept in
mind in parent choice. Regarding HCG, C1616-75 and CP52-43
were notable as female parents whereas Ja60-5, C334-64 and
My54129 as male parents.
