Abstract

The Mentha genus includes several important
species, which serve as raw material for industries like
perfumery, cosmetics, distillery and pharmacy. In Cuba, up to
date, the growing of mints does not represent a first line
commercial item; however, mint extracts are some way important
for their medicinal properties and use in manufacturing liquors.
The objective of this work was to determine hormonal
requirements for the in vitro multiplication of Mentha citrata
and Mentha piperita, as a part of a rapid multiplication
technology and the subsequent achievement of propagation
material from species of this genus. Five treatments were
assayed, based on Murashige and Skoog medium without
growth regulators. The following variables were measured:
number of internodes per shoot, number of shoots, and number
of roots. There were not significant differences at the number
of internodes per shoot for both species. Nevertheless,
significant interactions were observed for the variables number
of shoots and number of roots. The use of 6-BAP (1.0 mg.L-1)
provoked a significant increase for both variables in Mentha
piperita. Shoots and roots in Mentha citrata were obtained
independently of the hormonal combination assayed. It is
recommended to continue using the Murashige and Skoog
medium without growth regulators for the multiplication of
M. citrata, and to employ the basal medium of Murashige and
Skoog supplemented with 6-BAP (1.0 mg.L-1) for the in vitro
propagation of M. piperita.
