Characterization of local management systems of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) seed in two locations of La Palma, Pinar del Río
Main Article Content
Abstract
esculenta Crantz) seed systems was done in two communities
of La Palma, Pinar del Rìo, Canalete and Puesto Escondido, as
part of a diagnostic stage from the International Project of
Participatory Biotechnology. Data was obtained by farmer??s
surveys. Farmers produce, select, exchange and preserve
diversity. They have little access to seed derived from national
breeding system, their primary seed source has been local
clones that they exchange with other farmers within the
community; they have shown resistance to the main diseases
and pests of cassava in these ten years. Results showed the
need of providing farmers with a continuous access to new
varieties, that allow them to select the best for their particular
conditions.
