Abstract

The aim of this work was to study some
modifications provoked in rice root cells by aluminum exposure.
An experiment was developed, where different AlCl3 levels
were employed to impose stress condition. Root apical
segments were processed by a progressive low temperature
method (PLT) and to cut the samples, they were included in LR
white resin. Root sections were viewed with a Phase Contrast
microscope. Some growth orientation changes were detected
in epidermal and cortical cells, to contribute to cell elongation
inhibition. Thickened cell walls and a vacuole size increase
were observed, similar to other aluminum-stressed plants.
Results showed that aluminum provoked some modifications
in rice root cells, some of which are the structural cause of
morphological root thickening and shortening previously
observed in stressed rice roots in our laboratory.
