Abstract

With the aim of evaluating and comparing the
response of some growth components in tomato plants on a
compacted Red Ferralitic soil amended with several doses of
sewage sludge, this work was carried out at the National
Institute of Agricultural Sciences. One experiment with two
repetitions was conducted, in which an increase of plant height,
stem diameter, leaf area, shoot and root dry weight, and N and
P content of shoots was shown with sludge application. The
content of essential elements in the soil also increased by the
organic material application. In general, tomato plants responded
positively to sludge application, it being more accentuated
with higher doses of sludge and longer time between
application and evaluations. These results demonstrate that
applying sludge to agricultural production systems is an
alternative for plant nutrition and the improvement of soil
properties, that improve crop growth.
