Abstract

Modern agriculture, in order to avoid
environmental contamination problems and soil degradation,
has aimed its work to search and apply different nutritional
alternatives, that allow to keep high yields in the agricultural
production. The use of green manures known for millenniums,
is one of the mostly used alternative in the world, not only
because of its nutrient contribution but also for the checked
improvement of soil physical and biological properties.
Several studies made in Cuba and in the world have shown
the feasibility of using leguminous as green manure in rotation
with economic crops such as rice, potato, pumpkin, corn and
others. This review was aimed to present some results from
studying the dynamics of green manure mineralization and
the factors this process depends on. Also an outlook about
the use of the stable isotope 15N in the studies of manure
participation in crop nutrition was made, making some
emphasis on plant scoring and the evaluation of nutrient
profitability. The efficient use of green manures in agricultural
systems will depend on its adequate use, depending on the
specific conditions existing in each place where it is applied.
Taking into account the characteristics of each species,
according to its speed and the extention of mineralization, it
would be possible to optimize nitrogen absorption from green
manures by post economic crop and get this way the highest
crop productivity.
