Abstract

During early colonization stages of L. esculentum
by Glomus clarum and systemin addition, pathogenesis-related
proteins (?-1,3-glucanases and chitinases) were determined.
Assays were developed in a growth chamber. The basal
expression of these enzymes was observed in L. esculentum.
In relation to ?-1,3-glucanase expression, a variety effect in
tomato was found on activity level, in this case var. ??Amalia?
was better than ??Fire River?. A transitory increase of ?-1,3-
glucanase activity in roots of var. ??Fire River? was induced by
systemin at 2-day-post-germination and the increase was
rapidly attenuated. A second peak of the activity induction of
this enzyme was observed and could be possibly related to
fungal intensity on root (Visual Density percentage). Even
though an increased activity on foliar tissue was not observed,
when studying the combination of systemin and mycorrhizal
arbuscular fungi, a synergical effect was found, promoting a
chinolytic activity in colonization of tomato var.??Fire River?,
but this promotion was not observed when systemin was used.
A new synergical effect between systemin and G. clarum was
observed in the mentioned combination. The possible
induction of systemin response is indicated for the results
which could contribute to the systemic effect observed against
pathogens.
