Abstract

Several experiments were carried out to determine
the pathogenic action of P. infestans (Mont.) de Bary filtrates
on different potato organs and confirm their possible use on
in vitro selection of new tolerant forms to this pathogen. Some
detached leaves, as well as clonal pollen with different response
to pathogen in the field, which were previously exposed to
filtrate action, were used. It was found that the filtrate had a
specific host action, in other words, clonal response to its
action depended on their pathogenic resistance, that is why
the filtrate could be used on the selection of resistant forms.
Callus shoots under filtrate action were selected and finally
taken to the field, where its pathogen tolerance was evaluated.
The process included the evaluation of Alternaria solani
occurrence, the most important species after Phytophthora
infestans, in order to verify the superiority of the somaclonal
tolerance degree obtained over that of the donor plant in general
terms. The donor plant used was var. Desirée due to its
good tuber quality and yield, even though it is sensible to P.
infestans blight. Results showed that, in general, clones were
superior to the donor plant, not only in terms of pathogen
resistance but also concerning the main agricultural characters
and yield. This issue arises great expectations for using these
methods on crop breeding.
