Abstract

An important effort to collect pineapple
genotypes in Cuba and rescue the biggest species genetic
diversity, by means of national prospecting, has been made
during the latest years. A number of 59 accesions were
collected, many of them recognized and described for the first
time in Cuba. In general terms, the collected accessions could
be divided into three main groups: Cayenne, Red Spanish and
Pernambuco, the Red Spanish being the predominant variety.
The white pineapple or Cuban pineapple is restricted to a few
farmers, that is why its perpetuity could be in danger. Some
types of Cayenne were collected. ??Cabezona? or Puerto Rico
pineapple is only grown in Holguin and in some local farms of
Guantánamo. The main pineapple-growing area belongs to the
state sector, mainly in Ciego de Ávila. Even though it is possible
to find farmers with much training on pineapple crop, there is
not a great tradition in areas of the middle and the west parts
of Cuba. Some difficulties as to plantation management and
plant disease control are still detected. Farmers treasure up
the biggest part of the cultivated pineapple diversity in the
country. The accessions placed in the pineapple active
germplasm bank will be preserved for its study and use on
future genetic breeding works.
