Abstract

The need of diminishing the agrotoxic
consumption for banana crop handling enables the searching
of viable and agroecological alternatives. Thus, an experiment
was developed at the Researcher Center of Ciego de Avila
University from 1996 to 1998, to determine the effect of live
leguminous cover crops in a FHIA-03 banana plantation on a
Red Ferralitic soil (Eutric ferralsol). The effects of Centrosema
plumieri, Teramnus labialis and Stylosanthes guianensis were
evaluated on the agroecosystem. Parcels of eight plants of the
main crop (78 m2) were used as the experimental unit. It was
developed in one strip design for two years, obtaining a
significant weed reduction and a favorable behavior on the
phenologic indicators; all these positive tendencies as elements
can define soil quality as well as the reduction of some pests
causing the biggest damage in banana. Finally, the increment
of yields of the main crop and positive economic effects in the
handling of agroecosystem, specially with the use of Teramnus
labialis covering was appreciated.
