Abstract

The concept of the geographical information systems (GIS) was applied to a study dealing with the protection of soils as well as some other environmental components. The study was carried out in a representative area of Guantánamo Valley. Different types of large-scale maps were used, although the most important ones were 1: 10 000 and 1: 5000. The programs MapInfo, version 5.5 and Telemap, version 2.2 were employed. These programs allowed us the organization of all information into layers, their objects and attributes, creating a database. As a result of the work, a monitoring system and a package of technological solutions were established and validated under field conditions with excellent results.
