Abstract

Several criteria of fit and statistical significance were applied in order to select the estimates of Taylor??s Power Law (TPL) and Iwao??s Regression as ecological indicators of the spatial pattern of Thrips palmi Karny populations in plantations of potato, Solanum tuberosum L., under production conditions for three campaigns (1998-2000). Parameters a and b of TPL were estimated in two ways: changing the model by means of logarithmic transformation to make it linear and through nonlinear regression, as well as ? and ? in Iwao??s Regression. The significance of parameters and the model, the R-squared statistics, the sum of squares of standardized residuals, the correlation coefficient between observed values and predicted ones, and the fulfilment of theoretical assumptions through the evaluation of residuals were applied  in the analysis to choose the best model. As a result of the integral valuation of criteria, linearized TPL is the suitable model in order to select their estimates as ecological indexes of aggregation, with values of b=1.43 for larvae and b=1.20 for adults, indicating an aggregated spatial pattern.
