Abstract

Sugarcane belongs to Saccharum genus, an
Andropogoneae member of the Gramineae family (Poaceae).
Other genera such as Erianthus and Miscanthus are related
with Saccharum complex which could have contributed to
crop evolution. Saccharum genus is characterized by a high
polyploidy and a frequent aneuploidy; therefore, classical
cytological studies were carried out to give a general
information about sugarcane cytogenetics and to base breeding
programs. The main objective of this paper was the cytogenetic
characterization through chromosomal count of new wild
clones of Saccharum complex coming from ??Cuba-Laos?
collecting expedition, to confirm its taxonomic identification,
which had been previously reported by molecular descriptors,
also to determine the genetic stability of most promising wild
clones for its further application to nobilization.
