Abstract

Novoban 240 is a commercial enzymatic preparation from Novo Industri A/S with amylase activity which is obtained by submerged fermentation of Bacillus amilolichuefaciens and is used in wine industry. Moreover, it possesses endoxylanase activity, a closely related enzyme with the hypersensitive response of plant tissues upon pathogenic attack. A methodology for the partial purification of this enzyme using ion exchange chromatography on DEAE cellulose and SP Sephadex C-25 is established. The discrete enhance of reducing power during the enzymatic hydrolysis is an indicator confirming the presence of an endoxylanase in Novoban 240, which might be used to obtain xylo-oligosaccarides with
inducing activity of plant defense. The molecular weight estimated for this enzyme by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis is below 14 kDa.
