Abstract

55 potato genotypes were studied for two years (1996-1998): 24 commercial varieties and 31 clones from the International Potato Center (CIP) at the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, with the objective of selecting the best varieties and clones by means of studying the agronomic characters and pollen quality, to be used as parents in the potato breeding program. Flowering, yield, tuber number, average weight, field occurrence of A solani and P. infestans and pollen quality were evaluated through morphological staining and in vitro germination methods. the mean values of two years
were recorded for each character and genotype, besides estimating the mean, standard deviation, variance and variation
coefficient. For the quantitative characters and diseases, an
Analysis of Main Components was performed by means of a
correlation matrix. The blights were evaluated according to
the effective scales in the Regional Potato Cooperative Program
(PRECODEPA). Data of pollen quality are expressed in
percentage. The varieties Desirée, Atlantic, Baraka and Kondor
and CIP clones 110, 115, 23 and 114 were selected since they
were plenty of flowers, reached higher yields and behaved
appropriately in presence of diseases. CIP clones showed the
highest percentages of germination and pollen viability.
