Some results on carbon losses in Lixiviated Red Ferralitic soil ecosystems of the subhumid tropical climate of Cuba
Main Article Content
Abstract
with Red Lixiviated Ferralitic soils of Cuba (Ferralic Rhodic
Nitisols), in the red plain of soil formed over hard limestone
rock in San Jose de las Lajas region, Havana province, and in
the shield highlands of La Palma region, Pinar del Rio province.
In both cases, calculation is made between comparative stan-
dard profiles with conserve vegetation and soils cultivated for
many years. In San Jose de las Lajas region, different variants
were studied: by ficus trees, by fruit trees and by intensive
cultivation. In this case, carbon pools by fruit trees diminished
about 50 %, in the 0-20 and 0-50 cm layers from soil surface, in
relation with the carbon pools in the soil by ficus trees, besides
there is a loss of 70-75 % in the soils by intensive cultivation,
for this soil depth. In La Palma region, these losses were more
or less the same as in the previous region. In both cases, it can
be determined, at the 50-100 cm layer from soil surface, there is
a very hard loss of carbon pool in the soil profiles with intensive
cultivation. This process gives rise to the concept evolution
of soil to weathering crust in this layer, because of the lack of
the biological factor influence.
