Abstract

Phytogenetic resources are the basis for the
world??s food security. Mexico is one of the centers of origin
and diversity of various vegetable species, such as several
types of Capsicum. However, their mismanagement affects
preservation, mainly because of the human predatory action,
the overuse of chemicals and deforestation; all this explains
the effort of scientific and governmental institutions for its
care and preservation. The study was conducted in five
municipalities from the Frailesca region of the Central
Depression of Chiapas, Mexico. It was initiated by a survey
applied to 386 rural dwellers. The information was evaluated
through a frequency analysis. Results proved that the rural
population knows about the use of wild and semiwild chilli as
food and condiment, not as in the aspects related to its
preservation, which is performed by farmers in small gardens.
