Abstract

With the implementation of the participatory plant
breeding project in urban agriculture, the first phase of diagnosis
was performed, in San José de las Lajas municipality,
with the objective of carrying out an analysis of the existing
diversity in its plots and yards, making the characterization to
the farmers that are part of this project, and having a complete
knowledge on their most applied crop technologies. A survey
was made with 13 questions and 11 farmers were interviewed.
It could be proved with the survey that there were
representative farmers of the different levels of studies,
although there are not any university graduates and many of
them come from other provinces. Their main crops are
vegetables and fruits; however, they have little knowledge
about the varieties they are sowing as well as of the diversity
between them, because they mostly exchange seed among
themselves. Crop technologies can be considered insufficient,
although the soil is improved with the use of organic products
and biofertilizers to enhance fertility, pest and disease control
and use of sowing methods. This proves the need to provide
the farmers with new varieties of the favorite crops, according
to their necessities and conditions, to let them employ the
appropriate technologies to increase their production.
