Tomato genotypes in polyculture with maize and the effect of north-south and east-west row orientation
Main Article Content
Abstract
different tomato genotypes in polyculture systems, as well as
protecting the crop from adverse climatic conditions, that
appear in the nonoptimal period, through natural shade,
considering row direction in respect to sunrise and sunset, so
that a shade effect capable to modify phytoclimate system
level takes place. Lignon, INCA-17 and INCA9-1 genotypes
of determinate growth were seeded in polyculture and
monoculture arranged in two maize rows on both sides of three
tomato rows, where maize was seeded 30 days before
transplanting tomatoes and orienting rows N-S and E-O during
the early and late sowing periods. Results showed that even
for climatically adapted genotypes, the application of
polyculture system is valid, reaching tomato yields between
21.78 and 23.00 t.ha-1, additional soft maize yields of 5.72 and
7.04 t.ha-1 for the late and early periods respectively, that allowed
to increase the total production of the system.
