Abstract

For two seasons (1996-1997 and 1997-1998), 20 foreign potato varieties were studied at the Potato Research Station, with the objective of selecting the best varieties to be used as parentals for true seed production. Some morphoagronomic and reproductive traits were evaluated: tuber number, yield, tuber quality, flowering and occurrences of the main fungal disease on foliage in Cuba. The mean values per each trait were statistically processed by main components analysis through a correlation matrix. The varieties Raja, Fontenot, Atlantic, Century Russet, Carlita, Desirée and Kondor were selected for showing the highest tuber number, good-yielding capacity, low occurrence of Alternaria solani and Phytophthora infestans fungus and good flowering under field conditions. On the other hand, Fontenot, Kondor and Desirée variesties showed the highest percentages of pollen viability. Results indicate that these varieties could be used as parents in breeding programmes for true potato seed production.
