Abstract

This paper studies the results of Participatory
Plant Breeding (PPB) methods applied to the selection,
adoption and dissemination of tomato varieties by the farmers
from «El Tejar-La Jocuma» community, La Palma, Pinar del Río,
with the objective of enlarging the diversity of tomato varieties
and evaluating their impact on the community, the influence of
gender, as well as farmers??s role in their adoption and
dissemination. Results are presented in three stages: firstly,
one tomato fair was summoned by breeders and celebrated at
the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences (INCA); a second
fair was summoned by one farmer of the community above
mentioned and lastly, farmers were asked questions to know
the dissemination of new tomato varieties inside the community.
Results showed that the gender and producers: selection
criteria are very important. The introduction of new PPB
concepts for close relationships between farmers and breeders
is necessary to select varieties with specific adaptability in
farms; furthermore, farmers become effective seed
dissemination agents of new varieties inside the community.
The fairs allowed increasing tomato diversity with yield in the
community, besides strengthering farmers?? leadership on the
subject.
