The significance of location on soybean cultivar behavior during spring seedings in Cuba

Abstract
breeding program for spring seedings were evaluated in
Havana, Matanzas, Ciego de Avila, Camagüey, Santiago de
Cuba and Guantánamo provinces. For their evaluation they
were sown in the spring of 2000, 2001 and 2002, on a
randomized block design with four repetitions. The behavior
of these varieties was recorded by means of measurements
and/or determination of important crop characters, the
reproductive phases being days to flowering initiation (R1)
and physiological maturity (R8), grain/number hull, weight of
1000 grains, pods/plant, plant and first pod heights, root system
depth, grain weight/plant and grains yield/area. The data
obtained were processed by a factorial variance analysis of
random effects. The proportion of the variation attributed to
different factors and the estimate of the variation attributed to
the genotype were calculated. Site potential was also estimated.
The cycles of different varieties were affected per site; there
were notable site differences between the begining of flowering
and the end of the reproductive cycle of varieties, thus, there
was a site influence along with the reproductive time length of
different varieties. Site potentials are presented and it was
recommended to exploit soybean varieties in Havana and
Jovellanos areas, because they presented the most satisfactory
mean yields. It was denoted that there are some varieties which
are adaptable to spring seeding conditions, besides the
important effect of G-E interaction, proving the necessity of
local evaluations of varieties, as a previous phase of soybean
crop production generalization in Cuba.
