Abstract

With the objective of evaluating the benefits provided by rice-Azolla association to rice cultivation in Cuba, these works were developed during the period of March to July, 1998 in «Los Palacios» Rice Research Station located in the municipality �??Los Palacios�?� of Pinar del Río province, on a petroferric, ferruginous, nodular, Gley, Hydromorphic soil. This work appraises the influence of Azolla on rice crop. The results showed that this cereal was positively influenced by the use of Azolla in the used variants, the association with rice crop being emphasized, which permitted to increase the number of grains per panicle, panicle.m-2 and, consequently, a meaningful increase in rice yields. Furthermore, it was observed that the association of this fern regulates water temperature and pH, as well as reduces the quantities of plants that are not object of cultivation in more than 80 %. The use of this fern offers meaningful economic benefits with respect to the production check treatment.
