Abstract

This experiment was developed at the National
Institute of Agricultural Sciences (INCA), San José de las Lajas,
with the objective of evaluating the phenotypic diversity
of bean varieties used in ??La Palma? town, Pinar del Río, to be
further applied to participatory plant breeding. Therefore, 57
bean varieties of different color and size were collected in ??La
Palma? town, Pinar del Río, at the National Institute of Fundamental
Tropical Agriculture Researches (INIFAT) and ??Liliana
Dimitrova? Horticultural Research Institute, which were seeded
within the early and late seasons from October, 1999 to April,
2000. They were put on four rows per 4-m-plots arranged in a
randomized complete block design with minimum inputs. The
following variables were evaluated: days to flowering, days to
harvesting, yield, 100-seed-weight, seed number/plant, rust
and bacteriosis susceptibility according to sowing date. Those
variables were statistically processed through univariate and
multivariate analyses. Regarding the results, it is concluded
that farmers can play an important role in plant breeding, since
the varieties they selected and employed may surpass the
commercial and precommercial ones.
