Abstract

Results of an assay with the aim to compare
mineral contents of coffee leaves (Coffea arabica L var. Caturra
Rojo) under different shade managements and two planting
distances within rows, on a Reddish Brown Fersialitic soil in
??Sierra Maestra? mountains, are presented. Samples were taken
five times each year during the three first fruit productions.
Factor effects were strongly observed just before and during
the flowering step of the second reproductive cycle, when a
significant interaction between shade management and
planting distance took place; another shade management effect
was also observed just before that time. When shade
management effect was found, usually P contents were higher
under open sun, K and Mg contents being higher under shade;
N and Ca responses were more dependent on time. Structure
of correlation matrix, studied by factor analysis at the critical
end of flowering, underscored K-Mg antagonism in both shade
managements, while N and Ca contents related to that
antagonism was different depending on shade management.
