Abstract

The present work was carried out at the National
Institute of Agricultural Sciences (INCA), with the aim of
characterizing the phenotypic variability of a representative
tomato genotype sample, considering morphoagronomic
characteristics, including local and commercial varieties as well
as wild species from S. lycopersicum var. Cerasiforme,
S. pimpinellifollium, S. habrochaites, S. pennellii and
S. peruvianum. Thus, 26 morphoagronomic characters related
to plant architecture and fruit traits were evaluated. Data were
submitted to a Principal Component statistical analysis, in
which autovectors with values of ?0.50 in the main axes were
selected. Afterwards, 10 k-means cluster analyses from an
Euclidian distance matrix and the corresponding discriminant
analysis were performed. The best grouping was the most
accurate one in classifying groups. Cuban tomato collection
sample showed wide morphoagronomic variability, so that it
was possible to differentiate nine essential groups: one
consisted of accessions from the most distant wild species of
S. lycopersicum (S. peruvianum, S. pennelli and S. habrochaites),
another one made up by accessions from S. pimpinellifollium
and the remaining groups consisted of accessions from
S. lycopersicum; accessions from S. lycopersicum var.
Cerasiforme appeared in group 1 together with the smallest
accessions cultivated.
