Abstract

This research work was carried out in San José
de las Lajas, Havana province, with the objective of applying
different participatory methodologies, as a tool to support the
traditional extension methods that have been employed in
Urban Agriculture for some years and enabling to solve farmers??
problems regarding seed diversity access, either from species
or varieties, as well as its management. Therefore, several
stages were needed: the first one corresponded to three
Agrobiodiversity fairs?? celebration, in which producers had
the opportunity to select different varieties from their favourite
crops, like banana, tomato and pepper. The most selected
varieties were FIAT-01 ??banana-, Amalia ??tomato- and Co-
mandante Largo -pepper. The second stage was aimed at
farmers?? schools and rural experimentation on green bean,
following farmers?? criteria that allowed not only to increase
varietal diversity but also to encourage spreading and adopting
these new varieties. At the end of the study, economic profits
of producers?? access to different varieties are reported.
