Abstract

Many investigators consider that the
dominance of a species on another in a natural ecosystem, is
not only owed to competition, but also to the allelopathic
effect among plants. Allelopathic effects damage partially or
totally plant germination and growth; also they can be positive
or negative, direct and indirect, according to the concentration
of substances. Damages seem to depend on the influence of
different factors like species and variety, residues and affected
plants, quantity, place and climate influencing soil nutritional
stages, their microbial activity and other characteristics. The
presence of a dead covering on the soil, for many consecutive
years, affects the development of certain agricultural crops;
this is a fundamental element to a successful direct seeding,
as a result of removing undesirable plants. The present work
pretends to approach some topics on the phenomenon of
allelopathy, to deepen on its agroecological and evolutionary
meaning, its damages or benefits as well as its application
and use in agriculture and its effects on weed crops.
